About us

Digital Prevention Services Portfolio (DPSP) is part of NHS England.

We’re responsible for building and maintaining the essential digital infrastructure for preventative healthcare, delivering digital products and services for NHS staff and for patients.

We’re central to delivering the government’s healthcare priorities, outlined in the 10 Year Health Plan: analogue to digital, sickness to prevention, hospital to community. We play a part in all 3 of them.

Prevention is not a new idea. It’s been baked into the NHS from the very start. But what it means in terms of NHS processes and patient-facing services - all of that is very different today. Digital technology offers us enormous scope to simplify, automate and centre all services around user needs.

What we’re dealing with

  • 40% of the NHS budget is spent on treating preventable conditions
  • For example: £24 billion is the annual cost of treating cardiovascular disease
  • And £7.6 billion is the annual cost of treating cancer
  • 26 million people live with at least one long-term health condition
  • 2.8 million people are economically inactive due to long term sickness

What we’re aiming for

Our goal is radical reimagination of preventative healthcare.

We’re building for a future where patients can do more to manage their health and that of their dependents, with the NHS App as a lifelong companion to help guide the way. Where NHS staff have access to constantly improving, well maintained digital tools that reduce admin burden, all while upholding the highest standards of security, patient privacy and clinical safety.

We’re structured around delivery

We’re organised into 4 delivery areas, focused on specific aspects of healthcare: vaccinations, screening, children’s health and personalised prevention. These areas are supported by 2 additional support areas: one working on operations, and another on cross-cutting technology, data, innovation and communications.

How we work

Our teams build services for the NHS, by the NHS.

We are:

  • replacing and upgrading old NHS technology with modern alternatives
  • putting user needs first, designing and iterating with input from real people who will use what we build
  • upholding our values of being considerate, inclusive, bold and open

We’re eager to help

Most of our services have a direct impact on staff, or patients, or both. They are all free to use. We have a lot to offer to local teams in regions, ICBs, Trusts, GP surgeries and pharmacies.
